Cox Command Jeep (1972)

By | Jul 18, 2024

Probably everyone knew someone at some point who owned a Cox .049 powered Jeep.

The Command Jeep was one of the more detailed ready-to-run models that Cox offered back in the 1970’s. It had a detailed body with nice add-ons like a whip Antenna, spare tire and gas can.

Inside the cockpit were more details like gear shift levers and steering wheel. The front windshield could be folded down, too.

Under the hood, it was classic Cox. The .049 engine with heat sink head and pull start, drove a spiral gear that meshed with the axle drive gear. For starting, a slide “clutch” would disengage the axle gear from the spiral gear. The axle gear could slide along the axle to disengage/engage by means of a slide switch on the bottom of the Jeep.

Does it run? You betcha! Here’s an action shot taken while running:

…and of course, no action photo would be complete without some video!:

I really enjoyed your Cox Jeep video. I still have one of these new in the box, and never opened, that I purchased in 1976 from a hobby shop going out of business. I had intended on giving it to my wife’s nephew for a holiday gift but somehow it ended up in our attic.

    Thanks Again for the video,

    David
